I picked up an older air compressor and decided to find out how much life is left in it. In this video I’ll disassemble it, check for wear, clean up the valves, and see if it’s worth restoring.
0:30 Removing the cover
1:30 Brief exterior clean
2.45 Removing cylinder head
3:50 Checking valve plate. Plenty of build ups
4:10 Quick clean of valve plate to check if any damage present. Plate is in the good condition.
4:30 Removing and checking reeds. A lot of build ups, definitely not tight enough. No corrosion or damage.
5:00 Checking the gasket. It is in a good state and can be reused.
5:15 Removing second valve plate from cylinder top. It is stick to the gasket. Trying not to damage anything and not to break the cylinder ribs.
5:45 Plate finally came off. Definitely need cleaning.
6:00 Checking the cylinder. Discovered several minor vertical scratches. Slightly feel it with my nail. Estimate at 0.01-0.02mm. Consider it within tolerance.
6:25 Helper - assistant inspector has arrived. Didn't find anything interesting.
6:30 Cleaning piston top and checking the gap between piston and cylinder. Gap is good, can't notice any lateral movement.
7:10 Checking the scratches again with fully cleaned cylinder. I consider this scratches acceptable.
7:20 Cleaning all parts.
8:30 Getting dark. Will continue tomorrow. Wait for part 2.
