This afternoon Jackie flies into the nest with a coot but a juvie is hot on her tail screaming! The juvie makes an attempt to steal it but is unsuccessful and flies around landing in the nest tree. Shadow heard the commotion and lands in the basement. Jackie takes the coot to the nest and starts to pick at it but she is watching the juvie that is perched above. She leaves the coot and flies up to the branch and the juvie hops down and and quickly grabs the coot and flies off with it!!
This is a first year juvie hatched in 2022 and very well could be Spirit! It was very exciting to see such a successful steal since hunting takes time and skill to perfect and the young eagles do have to rely on stealing prey to survive (otherwise known as kleptoparasitism). Thank you for watching!
