The Clavier-Büchlein that J. S. Bach created for his son Wilhelm Friedemann in 1720 is an improvisation and composition manual. Johann Sebastian includes his first prelude from Book I of the Well-Tempered Clavier. Instead, of using a lot of precious parchment, he started the piece, and then simply provided five-note chords to indicate to his son to use those harmonies and continue with the rhythmic pattern established in the first six measures. This is an important clue to Bach’s improvisation pedagogy, and a method we can emulate.
Here I repurpose Bach’s template with the psalm and hymn tune OLD 100th.
Performed by Pamela Ruiter-Feenstra on the Richards, Fowkes & Co. organ, Op. XXII (2016) at Village Presbyterian Church, Prairie Village, Kansas. Recording Engineer: Nathan Bliss; Assistant: Dr. Elisa Bickers.
