Chapter 2: Model of Change- By Dr. Prochaska & Dr. Di Clemente

About:
The Transtheoretical Model (also called the Stages of Change Model), developed by Prochaska and Di Clemente in the late 1970s, evolved through studies examining the experiences of smokers who quit on their own with those requiring further treatment to understand why some people were capable of quitting on their own. It was determined that people quit smoking if they were ready to do so. Thus, the Transtheoretical Model (TTM) focuses on the decision-making of the individual and is a model of intentional change.

The Elements of Change

To succeed, you need to understand the three most important elements in changing a behavior:

Readiness to change: Do you have the resources and knowledge to make a lasting change successfully?

Barriers to change: Is there anything preventing you from changing?

Likelihood of relapse: What might trigger a return to a former behavior?

6 Stages:

Pre-contemplation: There is no intention of taking action.

Contemplation: There are intentions to take action and a plan to do so in the near future.

Preparation: There is intention to take action and some steps have been taken.

Action: Behavior has been changed for a short period of time.

Maintenance: Behavior has been changed and continues to be maintained for the long-term.

Relapse: Chances of quitting or getting back to former behavior
