The next generation of CTA 'L' cars are seen here testing on the Blue Line. Every new rail car series has to go through a variety of tests to ensure they are safe for passenger service. This includes making sure the rail cars can handle the stress on being on a heavy and long line, like the Blue Line. It's also the best place to stress test the train because of the worsening track conditions on the Blue Line's Congress branch, which is from UIC-Halsted to Forest Park.
CTA's 7000 Series cars, being built by CRRC Sifang America, will replace CTA's 2600 Series cars which were built between 1981-87 and are currently the oldest in the fleet. The base order for the cars is 400 cars. If all options are picked up for 846 railcars, the 7000 Series will also replace 3200 Series cars, built 1992-94 by Morrison-Knudsen. The cars are expected to run on the Blue, Brown, and Orange Lines.
