This is New Zealand, Not India - Protesters Block Sikh Parade with Haka | ISH News

Описание: On the afternoon of 20 December 2025, a Nagar Kirtan procession was held in South Auckland, Manurewa, New Zealand, to celebrate the birth of Guru Nanak Dev Ji. The parade was organized by the Nanaksar Sikh Temple, and hundreds of Sikh families walked nearly five kilometers along Great South Road. The organizers had secured all official permits to conduct the event on public streets.
Around 2:00 PM, the peaceful march was interrupted when a group of around 50 protesters calling themselves the True Patriots of NZ blocked the path. The group is linked to political leader Brian Tamaki and the Destiny Church. Protesters wore blue shirts with messages like “Kiwis First," “Keep NZ, NZ,” and “True Patriot.” They also displayed a banner reading, “This is New Zealand, not India.”
The protesters performed a haka dance in front of the Sikh participants and shouted religious slogans such as “One True God,” “Jesus,” and “God of Nation.” Some Sikhs reported that the protesters hid their shirts and flags until the parade came near the temple entrance. The protesters also criticized the carrying of ceremonial swords and daggers. Despite the confrontation, the Sikh community remained calm and did not respond with violence.
Police arrived quickly, formed a barrier between both groups, and ensured the parade continued safely. The standoff lasted 20–30 minutes before protesters were moved aside. No injuries or arrests were reported.
Local leaders condemned the disruption. Sikh groups, including the Akal Takht, urged the New Zealand government to provide a safe environment for religious practices.
