Описание: Delhi is experiencing a severe public health emergency as air pollution reaches dangerous levels. The Delhi-NCR region is under GRAP-4, the highest emergency category, activated when the AQI becomes hazardous. In some areas, the AQI has crossed 1000, meaning the air itself is toxic. Schools and colleges have shifted online, offices are working remotely, construction is stopped, public events are cancelled, and people are advised not to go outside.
Doctors warn that breathing Delhi’s air right now is medically unsafe. Many people are reporting burning eyes, chest tightness, wheezing, breathlessness, dizziness, headaches, and worsening asthma. For children, elders, and people with heart or lung conditions, the risk is extremely high. Visibility has dropped to 2–3 metres in many places, with smog mixed with winter fog making driving risky and disrupting flights and trains.
Many families are leaving Delhi out of desperation. People are travelling to places like Dehradun and even Rohtang Pass, where traffic jams are now being seen because so many are trying to escape the pollution. Allegations have also surfaced that water spraying is happening near AQI machines to artificially reduce readings.
The crisis is creating public anger. Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta was booed at a public event with Lionel Messi, with people shouting “AQI, AQI.” The government’s decision to ban coal and firewood tandoors has also been criticised as symbolic, while bigger pollution sources remain unresolved. Several foreign missions, including the High Commission of Singapore, have issued health advisories.
With low winds and high moisture trapping pollutants, experts warn that no immediate relief is expected. For now, doctors advise Delhi residents to stay indoors, avoid outdoor activity, keep windows closed, and wear N95 or N99 masks if stepping out.
