STORYLINE:
Philippine motorists queued outside gas stations in Manila on Monday night to fill their tanks ahead of a fuel price surge caused by the US-Israel war against Iran.
Oil companies announced a large pump price hike starting Tuesday. Prices are expected to rise by 17 to 24 pesos ($0.30 to $0.40) per liter.
“First of all, if he (U.S. President Donald Trump) wants peace, he should not have waged war on Iran, right?” said 46-year-old Transportation Network Vehicle Service driver Antonio Espartero.
“The ones who will suffer most are small countries like ours,” Espartero added.
Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. said last week that he plans to talk to Congress about granting him emergency authority to reduce excise taxes on petroleum products if prices reach or exceed $80 per barrel.
Sixty-five-year-old Orlando Banal, who has been driving a passenger jeepney in Manila, said his diesel expenses have almost doubled ahead of Tuesday’s increase.
“It will be a very big loss for us drivers,” Banal said.
