Capstone Title:
The Role of Communications in Risk Management: Best Practices for Strategic Reputation Risk Management
Abstract:
This study examined the role of communications in strategic risk management. It aimed to understand how and to what extent Public Relations (PR) brings value to strategic risk management through crisis mitigation. The study explored how and to what extent communicators can use models and best practices to enhance crisis mitigation. This exploratory research found that PR adds value to the risk management function through strategic reputational risk management. This research identified several best practices for reputational risk management for the Chief Communications Officer (CCO). Thirteen professionals across Canada were interviewed, and an in-depth content analysis of 18 crisis mitigation frameworks was conducted. The analysis indicates that participants’ companies fall within a broad spectrum from being tactical to being both strategic and tactical in their reputation risk management function. They were at different maturity levels in terms of reputation measurement and reputational risk governance. The interviews and content analysis findings identify a conceptual framework for ongoing strategic reputational risk management and provide practical recommendations that aim to enhance the CCO’s role in risk management.
