One aspect of working in a RLD and CLA approach that I really love is the freedom to explore and discover solutions in a skillful manner players are afforded. They are allowed to use the technical elements they have in a manner that fits them.
For this reason the starting point for all my activities is to simply setup the environment and provide the objectives. Before I jump in and control them with a scripted solution, i.e. "I want you to do an escape", I allow them to use what they see and feel (perceptions) to form solutions that work for them (actions).
I always have an intention (in this drill I actually want the delay solution) but I can't just take over and control. I want to first see if any of them can come up with the delay on their own. If they can then I may not have anything to teach.
When the intention of the drill is not being achieved that is when the real coaching starts. You then have to dive into the methods of the CLA to guide the outcomes and learning.
You will see in this drill that only one player used the escape. Two players simply drove the net.
All were good solutions as they were based on information the player perceived and based on that information came up with their best solution.
But now I want to encourage the delay. I want to do something with the information in the environment in a way that will afford players the delay as a solution.
I move the defender in front of the attacking player and skating backwards. This should take away the net drive and afford the delay.
You will also see that when I moved the defender it also afforded players the cut back into the middle as a solution. This illustrates the power of allowing players to perceive the information they are presented with and creating solutions.
