NDRC 2013 Stand 7 "Fallen Worker Suspended from Silo" VICSES SES Victoria Australia
In this stand a worker who had been working on the side of a Silo had been jostled about during the earthquake hitting the side of the Silo several times, suspended in his harness and lifeline rope attachments. The worker (casualty) was only 2.3 m above ground and was unconscious/unresponsive. Teams were required to release the casualty and safely bring him to the ground, provide first aid including spinal care and transport to an awaiting ambulance nearby.
The competition.
State and Territory Emergency Service Volunteers from across Australia attended the National Disaster Rescue Competition hosted by Victoria State Emergency Service and held at the Country Fire Authority (CFA) training facility, Fiskville North of Melbourne Victoria.
The competition was run over two days where each competing team underwent 7 rescue scenarios. The scenarios realistically depicted a range of emergencies that rescuers would be called upon in the event of an earthquake.. The scenarios were supported by volunteer members of St John Ambulance who used their medical skills to realistically act out the pains and complications of the injuries relative to each stand, screams and all.
Whilst the range of stands were diverse in comparison, each presented a complex situation requiring Team Leaders to prioritise and task their team systematically throughout the rescue.
All teams displayed an exemplary sense of urgency and direct effective control of the situation they were presented with. Casualty care was beyond reproach.
In these events there is only one winner... that's just how competitions work, but really, everyone who attended and took part, were winners.
