Tywin stands near the dais in the great sept of baelor, proudly looking at Cersei and Robert as his golden haired daughter marries the black haired king. When the vows are pronounced, Tywin lets out a long satisfied breath. Finally, his bloodline was on the throne. One thing catches his eye, Ned Stark watching the proceedings with a small bundle in his arms. Tywin had seen him carrying the child around the red keep as if he didn't want to let the babe out of his side. If Tywin were a man to smile he would have. So, Ned Stark was just as much of a hypocrite as everyone else. However, when he returns to the Rock, Tywin finds himself unable to forget Ned Stark holding the child.
Tywin: He didn't have a woman with him when he left, and he came back from Dorne with the child. Though perhaps he's Ashara Dayne's son. But, the timing doesn't make sense. Also, Ashara Dayne supposedly had a stillborn daughter, and not twins. He seemed so… protective. Like the child was precious to him.
The more Tywin chews on the strangeness of this puzzle, the more he finds himself obsessed with it. Often he sits in his office, stewing over the puzzle. Ned Stark wouldn't do something like that, especially not during a war, besides, even if he did, the timeline and locations didn't make sense. That boy and his mother were significant to Ned Stark, enough to leave his honor at the door and offend his new wife. If he could find leverage on Ned Stark, then he could exploit that. Even if the North didn't have mineral resources, if a war were to break out, having an army of Northmen on his side might be something to consider.
Finally, if only to stop fixating on this unsolvable mystery, Tywin starts attempting to find the answer to the puzzle. However, to Tywin's irritation, despite his network of informants he's unable to find any information about Ned Stark having a mistress within the timeframe he'd calculated. Tywin's frustration starts to mount when after several years of searching, Ned Stark's mistress remains a ghost.
Tywin: Where is she? Why was she so special? Something doesn't make sense. He didn't have a child with him when he was here in the capital, then when he went to Dorne to rescue his sister he came back with a child. He didn't…
Tywin grabs his quill and starts penning a letter. Of course, he'd been focused on the wrong Stark. Ned Stark wouldn't sire a bastard, but his sister's child now that is someone he would do a great deal to protect. Especially if the child was Rhaegar’s. But was he legitimate? If he was, then Tywin might have to either kill him or turn him to his own purposes. Now this was a prize unlike anything he could have imagined. With that, Tywin shifts his search to finding any documents of Lyanna and Rhaegar's marriage, the possible paths they might have taken. Slowly, he begins compiling the pieces until he has everything he needs.
Tywin: So, he is the legitimate son of Rhaegar and Lyanna. But what to do about him? Kill him or make him into my tool?
Both options had merit, but after considering having someone of Rhaegar's talents as a warrior and politician as his sworn sword had a great deal of merit. Killing him would likely spark a conflict, even if he revealed who the boy was, there was that possibility that Robert would side with his old friend. Finally, Tywin decides that having a pet dragon was of more use than a dead one.
Now that the course was determined, Tywin personally drafts a letter to Eddard Stark. When Ned receives a letter requesting that he meet Tywin in an unpopulated area north of Moat Caitlin. Immediately, Ned wants to refuse the request, but then he reaches the end of the letter.
Ned: Your boy is of great interest to me. I see a great deal of potential in someone with his lineage. Oh, no, he knows about Jon.
Ned runs his hand over his face, horror dawning over him. This was the worst case scenario. He'd kept him hidden not just from Robert but Tywin as well, especially after the sack of King's Landing. If the Old Lion knew, then he had Ned backed into a corner. Reluctantly, Ned pens a letter and sends it to Tywin.
