Tommen stares at the crown in his hands, feeling his fingers clench against the metal until blood begins to well between them and tears sting his eyes. He’s tempted to throw the thing across the room and curse himself and his seat.

He says that this is what had caused this all, a crown that does not sit well on his head. That’s what caused this explosion, the murder of his wife and the death of thousands. Tommen wants to blame everything on the crown, but another thought flashes right after.

He hadn’t asked for this, Margaery hadn’t asked for this. She was willing to cooperate with the Faith Militant, to work with the High Sparrow. Even his grand uncle Kevan and uncle Jaime didn’t want this. They had threatened violence, but were talked down and punished for it.

There was only one person who could have wanted this. He calls to the servant who reports the news and asks him to check on his mother. Tommen lies and says that his mother would likely be concerned about Margaery’s well-being.

The man bows and promises to bring the news to her. Meanwhile, Tommen closes his eyes and sets the crown down, allowing another servant to tend to his bleeding fingers.

By the time the first man returns, Tommen’s fingers are being bandaged. The young man looks pale, but the boy king gets his answer. When the servant explained what happened in the Sept of Baelor, Cersei had not said anything. She simply sipped her wine and told the man that she wished to be left alone to consider everything.

Yet when he glanced back as he left, he could have sworn that he saw Cersei smiling to herself.

That is more than enough answer for Tommen. He stares down at the bloodied crown on his lap. The loss he was feeling moments before is replaced with hatred. Hatred for his mother and everything she’s done. He pictures the sight of her in her chambers, sipping her wine as she watches the smoke rising. It doesn’t matter how many innocents have died because of her, yet she would not even give them a second thought.

Another image begins to form. He had been prepared to jump when his servants told him what happened, but now, the desire was changed, not for oblivion for him, but for it to be his mother splattered against those steps.

But thoughts of revenge are tempered with the cold realization of their position. There is no doubt that other houses would blame him for this. The Tyrells would be chief among them, and that means they can no longer count on them as allies.

And then there are the Martells, Starks, and Tullys to contend with. They only hold the Westerlands, Stormlands, and Riverlands, and those latter too tenaciously.

None of that even mentions the people outside.

Tommen: I shall hold court today.

Qyburn: Your grace, is that wise? Given the tragedy, people might not be-

Tommen: This tragedy is precisely why I cannot be absent. My people need to see their king acting.

Qyburn nods and hurries off, rushing to send word to the lords and ladies of the Red Keep to gather in the throne room.

As Tommen walks, servants come rushing forward, placing a fresh cloak around him and handing him a sword. It is dulled, but he does not intend to use it. Not yet. Another offers to wipe the blood off his crown, but the king waves him off as he places it on his head.

He sees dozens of highborn lords and ladies, leading citizens, and a few knights. Tomment greets them as he seats himself on the Iron Throne.

Tommen: I thank you for coming here on such short notice. However, given the circumstances, this is not a court of splendor and color, not today. As you all know, the Sept of Baelor was destroyed, and with it, many lives were lost, including my beloved Queen Maegaery. That is why I summon you today. The Seven made us men, but they did not make us to be alone. I bring you here so we may share the grief of what has just occurred in our capital.

Tommen has a septon come and lead them through prayers, as well as collecting donations for the victims and survivors. As the court follows with this solemn ceremony, they see Tommen standing atop his throne with his arms clasped together and eyes closed, offering his prayers, looking every bit the pious king that everyone thinks him to be.
