On the waters of Tonle Sap Lake in Pursat province, tradition meets transformation. For generations, women in Au Akol have carried forward the art of prahok and smoked fish, turning the day’s catch into food for families and communities. Today, with support from the CAPFISH‑Capture: Post-harvest Fisheries Development project, these women are gaining new skills, modern hygiene tools, and market access that are changing lives.
Working together as the Au Akol Fishery Processor Group, they’ve moved from isolated home production to collective strength—improving product quality, building buyer trust, and earning better incomes. Families can now send children to school, live in greater harmony, and invest in their future.
This isn’t just about livelihoods, it’s about conservation too. By practicing safer post‑harvest management, the women of Au Akol are helping sustain fish stocks and protect the Tonle Sap ecosystem. Their story shows how empowering women processors uplifts entire communities and preserves Cambodia’s natural heritage.
This story is part of the CAPFISH-Capture: Post-harvest Fisheries Development Project, funded by the European Union (EU) and jointly implemented by the Fisheries Administration (FiA) and UNIDO.
