CA Road Trip: 🏰Pirate Tower, 💗Madonna Inn, & 🚙Camping (Days 1 & 2 of 11)

We had to rush through our visit to the hidden 'Pirate Tower' 🏴‍☠️ because the tide was coming in too fast... then we explored the completely over-the-top, pink paradise of the Madonna Inn 🩷✨... and yes, we finished the day at Gum Alley 🍬🤮 to see what millions of pieces of chewed gum looks like up close. Travel Log: CA Coastal Trip Day 1-2

Another adventure, only this one was more local. We decided to do a 11-day trip up the California coast pretty much staying at different campgrounds every night.

Once loaded, we headed north and our first stop on Highway 1 was the Pirate Tower in Laguna Beach. We had a bit of a trek from where we found parking, through the cool Victoria Beach neighborhood, to the beach entrance nearest the tower. We enjoyed a nice walk along the shore up to the tower which is just a stairway to the beach from one of the homes up on the cliff. The tide was coming in so we had to rush the visit.

Our goal the first day was to get out of town, so after the 2 hour drive to the Pirate Tower we drove the next 4 hours straight to Fillmore where we stayed at a Best Western. Part of the highway was still closed from the fires, so this area gave us a good jumping off spot for the next morning. We checked out the Red Engine Brewing Company next to the hotel and had an early dinner of pizza, salad and beer flights.

We started the next day early and after a quick stop for gum, headed to Oceano Dunes State Vehicular Recreation Area. We entered the beach from Pier Ave (down by the superstition area), stopped to breath in the fresh air and then continued north and exited on the Grover Beach side and W Grand Ave.

From there it was just a short drive to San Luis Obispo and the famous Madonna Inn. We were staying but we killed well over an hour walking the property and checking out all of the crazy décor, including the bathrooms. Every area of the hotel was over the top! It was such a fun stop. One more quick stop before going to our first campground.

San Luis Obispo is such an adorable city, the quaint streets are loaded with a ton of shops and restaurants, but we didn’t stop at any of them. We headed straight to Gum Alley to add our DNA to the millions of other peoples DNA on the walls. Gross.

We arrived at the Islay Creek Campground in Los Osos with plenty of time to screw around before dark. Strange how only 30 minutes away, the weather went from warm and sunny to cool and overcast. We set up camp and started to explore the area. First exploration: Islay Creek. Then we did the Bluff Trail hike and no one fell off the cliff. Back at camp we had an awesome dinner of Steak and mushrooms, garlic shrimp, and potatoes and then enjoyed the local wildlife before settling in.
