In todays video, I'll be showing you how to perform a transmission fluid drain and fill on a sealed transmission with no dipstick. I'll be demonstrating this on a 2020 Jeep Compass with a 9 speed ZF 9HP transmission (specifically the 948TE/9HP48 found in this Compass.) This design of transmission is found on many makes and models including but not limited to the Acura TLX & MDX, Chrysler 200, Pacifica, & Voyager, Honda Civic, CR-V, Passport, Pilot, Odyssey, & Ridgeline, Jeep Cherokee, Compass, & Renegade, RAM ProMaster, Land Rover Range Rover Evoque & Discovery Sport, Jaguar E-Pace, and the Nissan Pathfinder. Despite the same general design, the specifications for each transmission will vary from vehicle to vehicle, including the type of ATF used, the dipstick needed to measure the fluid, and the chart needed for reference when checking the fluid level. Be sure to check you owners manual and service manual to ensure you're using the right items.
These ZF 9HP transmissions have been described as a "sealed" transmission with "lifelong" fluid by the manufacturers, but the truth is that's a lie. These transmissions have a drain and fill plug like any other transmission found in any other car on the road. Additionally, the fluid is not a lifelong fluid and should be routinely changed, also like any other transmission. Another over-exaggerated lie told by the industry is this procedure requires specials tools and can only be performed by a trained professional. Changing the fluid on these transmissions is actually pretty easy, slightly more difficult due to the lack of a build in dipstick, but still easy. You really only need 3 "special" items. First is the transmission temperature sensor which is built into your car and easily accessible via the dashboard. Second is a dipstick that can be bought for $12. The last item we need is the ATF fluid level chart which tells us how full the transmission should be given the temperature of the fluid.
My recommendation for a service interval is to start by doing a single drain and fill every 30,000 miles. Then assess the fluid at each service interval to determine the fluid condition and whether you need to increase or decrease the frequency of the intervals. Everybody's vehicle, driving style, and driving conditions will be different and 30,000 mile intervals may not by the ideal for everyone. Also take note that when you perform an ATF drain and fill, you're only replacing about 50-75% of the old fluid. Even still, I recommend more frequent single drain and fills than longer interval 3x3 procedures. By waiting longer, you're allowing your fluid to get much dirtier which can cause more wear and tear than performing more frequent servicing. More frequent drain and fills will keep the ATF consistency cleaner and avoids the risk of shocking the transmission by suddenly introducing too much clean fluid all at once, similar to a transmission flush which we all know is bad.
