We’ve all been there. It’s that thing everyone keeps in the back of their mind when starting on a game, or an animation, or a drawing, or a website, or anything else. Nobody likes going through this and it’s what can destroy any desire in pursuing any creative hobby: Burnout.
This is a retrospective around two examples of where and when I had to go through some form of burnout or drought in motivation throughout my time creating games. One of them was within the VR social game Rec Room, while another was a completely separate game in Unity I spent an entire year of my life working on before scrapping it altogether. I’ve started taking game dev seriously in 2021, yet no other project has been as hard as these when it comes to dealing with motivation (in game development).
