Residents of the Sporong informal settlement west of Johannesburg are hopeful that the deployment of SANDF members to tackle illegal mining will bring peace and stability to their area.
President Cyril Ramaphosa announced in his State of the Nation address last week that the soldiers will be deployed to Gauteng and the Western Cape to help police tackle gang-related violence and illegal mining.
Last month, residents of Sporong informal settlement fled to the nearest community hall in Randfontein, west of Johannesburg, to seek refuge after being terrorised by illegal miners.
