The Argentine Confederation (1831–1861) was a loose federation of provinces emphasizing provincial autonomy. Dominated by Juan Manuel de Rosas (1835–1852), it struggled with internal conflicts between federalists and Unitarians and external challenges with neighboring countries. Buenos Aires often acted independently, fueling tensions. The Confederation adopted a constitution in 1853 but dissolved after Buenos Aires' victory at the Battle of Pavón in 1861, leading to the formation of the Argentine Republic.
