“Hymn do miłości Ojczyzny” (Hymn to the Love of the Fatherland) is a patriotic Polish song written by Ignacy Krasicki in 1774, during the reign of King Stanisław August Poniatowski, the last king of Poland. It is often regarded as the first national hymn of Poland, long before the current anthem, Mazurek Dąbrowskiego, was adopted.
The lyrics express the idea that one should love the homeland above all else, valuing it even more than personal life or individual interests. The hymn praises sacrifice, honor, and devotion as the highest duties of citizens toward their country.
Historically, this hymn emerged at a time when the Polish–Lithuanian Commonwealth was in decline, threatened by neighboring powers and successive partitions. Because of that, the hymn became a moral anthem, strengthening patriotism and national identity in an era of crisis.
