Making a coaster with simple & basic Sashiko stitches Part1 - Sashiko stitching for beginners

I've been thinking about making some practical gifts for this Christmas.
So I made these coasters today.

This design uses only very simple running stitches so it's a perfect project for Sashiko beginners.
I am also still learning the techniques and I know there are a lot of pre-printed Sashiko coaster kits with beautiful and complicated designs but even the simple stitches can make a pretty design!

In this video, I will stitch the design using a technique called Hitome-zashi. You don't need to draw the design itself but a grid on fabric (I forgot to mention this in the video but please use an ERASABLE PEN when you draw it!). And you'll stitch the design along the grid. The grid I'm using here is a 20x20 grid with 5mm squares. The size of squares can be 1/4 inch or 7mm (small enough for one stitch). If you use 1/4 inch squares, then draw a frame of 5 in x 5 in and a 20x20 grid inside of it. You can even make your own variation by drawing a bigger grid such as 25x25, or stitching more crosses, etc.

For the stitching process, I'm using a fine Sashiko thread and a Sashiko needle but you can try it with 2 or 3 strands of embroidery threads and an embroidery needle if you don't have them!
