Relationships can be tricky, and breakups suck so most of us play some mind games to avoid the discomfort and pain that come with breakups. Deciding whether to break up or stay in a relationship can be really conflicting. It can be hard to tell when to break up with someone or when to exit a relationship.

Here are the top fears that hold people from breaking up with someone who isn't right for them or leaving a relationship that's already over. If these are the reason that you're staying with your significant other, then it might be time for some inner reflection about your long-term goals and whether you're really right for each other

1. What other people will think about the breakup
2. Being judged for showing up alone to events
3. Explaining to friends and family why you broke up
4. Starting over and being single
5. Separating friends or family
6. Cost of living alone or moving out
7. Learning to be independent again
8. Breakups are inconvenient!
9. Having upcoming travel plans together
10. Self doubt

These are the top fears I felt or excuses I made up while hesitating to leave a relationship of 4.5 years.

Note: These breakup fears and signs you should break up are based on my personal experience being in a healthy but unfulfilling relationship. I did not discuss any sort of verbal, physical, or emotional abuse because I am not an expert in this and was fortunate enough to never experience it.
