In 1873, three Norwegian women were living alone on Smuttynose Island, a lonely rock six miles off the coast of New Hampshire. Their husbands were away in Portsmouth when a desperate drifter named Louis Wagner learned they were alone. That night he stole a small boat, rowed ten miles through moonlit water, and arrived at the island with murder on his mind.
