Описание: How much of who we are is written in our DNA, and how much is shaped by the world around us?

In Where Biology Ends and Bias Begins, biologist Dr. Shoumita Dasgupta unpacks one of the most persistent myths in science: that genes neatly determine traits like intelligence, behavior, race, or even destiny. From the rise of “gene for” thinking in the 1990s to today’s polygenic risk scores, she explains why complex human traits are never controlled by a single gene and why even large clusters of genetic variants are probabilistic, not predictive. Our genomes matter, but so do family environments, structural inequities, lived experiences, and social context. When biology is oversimplified, it can reinforce harmful assumptions, especially in medicine, where race is often misused as a biological shortcut instead of understood as a social factor with real health consequences.

The conversation also explores how science intersects with identity, challenging binary thinking around sex and illuminating the biological reality of intersex variation, which affects as many people as red hair. It examines disability through both medical and social lenses, showing how shifting from a “deficit” model to one of universal design benefits everyone. At its core, this program asks: What happens when we mistake bias for biology? By grounding complex debates in genetics, evolution, and human development, this discussion offers tools to think more clearly about race, gender, disability, and health, and to separate scientific evidence from cultural assumptions in a politically charged moment.
