From measles outbreaks and addiction trends to e-scooter and e-bike safety, Ontario’s doctors are calling on parents and students to stay on top of the latest trends with a comprehensive checkup on back-to-school health and safety.
It can be difficult for parents to stay up to date on the latest fads youth are taking up. Trendy gadgets like e-scooters may seem like a fun way to get to and from school, but emergency departments are seeing an uptick in collisions involving them. Addictions specialists are also sounding the alarm on the use of ZYNs– flavoured nicotine pouches teens can inconspicuously tuck behind their lip during class time. Top Ontario doctors can offer insight into these new pressures youth are facing at school and some helpful tips to keep them safe and healthy.
OMA President Dr. Zainab Abdurrahman chaired a panel that also included:
Dr. Daniela Lobo, an addictions psychiatrist from the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) who focuses on addictions trends among youth
Dr. Steve Lin an emergency physician, trauma team leader, scientist and the Interim Chief of Emergency Medicine at St Michael's Hospital.
