United Nations Secretary-General H.E. António Guterres made history as the first UN chief to visit Papua New Guinea, joining Prime Minister Hon.James Marape in Port Moresby during the nation’s 50th Independence Anniversary.
In a joint press conference, Mr Guterres delivered a powerful message of solidarity:
Praising PNG’s resilience, unity, and democracy over 50 years.
Highlighting the Bougainville Peace Agreement as a global model of perseverance and mutual respect.
Commending efforts to prevent violence, empower women, and create opportunities for PNG’s youth.
Calling for urgent global climate action, stressing that PNG absorbs carbon but suffers first from its impacts.
Urging reform of the international financial system to better serve developing countries.
