As an occupational therapist working with adults, I use “crossing the midline” often in brain rehabilitation (for stroke, traumatic brain injury, and dementia). My colleagues, working in pediatrics, use it often as well to support optimal cognitive development. We all have the same goal - get both hemispheres of the brain to work well together, optimize brain function and communication.
I use this pose, Thinking Chair, regularly in my yoga classes too as a strategy to address multiple areas:
1. Improve and maintain leg strength - lower body strength is correlated with improved cognition and reduced leg strength is connected to increased dementia risk and falls
2. Improve and maintain balance - reduce fall risk. Falls are one of the greatest contributors to disability as we age.
