This was a very special walk for me revisiting my home town Hornsea on the East Yorkshire coast of England. From the calming Hornsea Mere at Kirkholme Point to the promenade and beach. Look out for the unbelievably fortunate sighting of a white squirrel in the cemetery. According to wildlife experts, they are one of the rarest animals in the UK, with an estimated 50 individuals believed to exist. How lucky then to capture one on film for this channel!

The stone lions in the Memorial Gardens bring back fond memories of riding them with my brother when we were kids. They were rescued from The Criterion Picture Theatre in Hull when it was closed down on June 14th, 1969. It was originally named The Majestic Pictures and opened as far back as 1st February 1915.

In 1086, the Manor of Hornsea was held by Drogo de la Beuvriere who had been put in charge of Holderness by William the Conqueror. The Domesday Book records that the chief inhabitant was a man called Wizo, who was in charge of twelve peasants. There was also a church and a priest, and 60 acres of meadow. Drogo’s successor gave the manor of Hornsea to the great Benedictine Abbey of St. Mary at York.

By 1203 Hornsea was one of the four wealthiest manors in Holderness and in 1257 St. Mary’s Abbey obtained a Royal Charter to hold a weekly market on Wednesdays. The trade and prosperity of the town increased and in 1359 King Edward III granted the Abbey the right to hold two fairs each year. By 1377 Hornsea was the fifth largest settlement by population in the East Riding. Hornsea also encompasses the lost or deserted villages of Hornsea Beck, Northorpe and Southorpe.

Hornsea Mere is owned by Wassand Hall and was purchased by the Hall's estate for £50 in the 16th century. It is 2 miles in length and up to 0.75 mile in width, and is the largest freshwater lake in Yorkshire. It was acquired by the Constable family in the 16th century. When the park was extended in the early-19th century, after Charles Constable inherited the estate in 1812, the mere became an integral part of the landscape, which much additional planting around the perimeter carried out by the estate.

There is evidence of prehistoric human activity in the area. Near Norththorpe, north of Hornsea crop marks indicate a site interpreted as a Neolithic henge monument, thought to have been later reused as a Bronze Age ringwork.

The church of Saint Nicholas dates to the 13th century, with alterations in the 14th and 15th centuries.

Bettison's Folly is a tower built some time between 1829 and 1853 by William Bettison, a Hull-based brewer who built the folly in what was then his garden. In those days communication was by sight, so his manservant would ascend the tower at the usual time his master returned from work, see him descending Southorpe hill and run down the tower to ensure "dinner was served" as the master walked into the house.

The Congregational Church near Memorial Gardens was built in 1874.

The Hull to Hornsea railway line was officially opened on 28 March 1864 and closed in 1964/5. Hornsea Bridge Station was later demolished. The railway line's closure led to some contraction of the tourist industry, and decline in the town.
