Designing a mandala without a preliminary pencil guide changes the energy of the process entirely.
In this third Small Mandala Practice session, I used a new mandala stencil and committed directly to black ink from the start, drawing all the available guide lines from the template to establish a bold structural framework. Instead of building gradually with light pencil marks as I often do, the thick black lines immediately defined the space and set clear boundaries for the design.
From that structured beginning, the composition began to evolve organically. What started as a network of straight and curved lines gradually transformed into a floral mandala, emerging naturally from the framework provided by the stencil.
Once the design felt established, I introduced pastel gel pens to soften the structure and bring gentle color into the composition. After finishing the coloring, I returned to black ink to add a few final details that helped unify and complete the piece.
This session explores how committing early to strong structure can shape the entire creative process — and how even predefined lines can become the foundation for something intuitive and expressive.
How do you approach working with stencils or templates in your own designs? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
Happy designing in the round!
