Designing a mandala without a plan always requires trust — and choosing bold neon colors makes that trust even more essential.
In this second Small Mandala Practice session, I began by building the structure slowly with a black gel pen, allowing the design to grow outward organically, ring by ring. As the composition developed, I added more detailed black shapes and filled certain areas in completely before introducing color. Anchoring the design this way felt safer — a way to create stability before bringing in hues that might otherwise compete or clash.
When I finally introduced the neon palette, the intensity was undeniable. At moments, it felt like it might be too much. Instead of stepping back, I continued forward, letting the bold tones interact with the established black forms and trusting that the relationships would resolve themselves over time.
This session explores what happens when you prepare the ground carefully — and then commit fully to a strong creative choice. What began with hesitation gradually became a vibrant and cohesive mandala that feels both intricate and balanced.
How do you approach bold color decisions in your own work? Do you anchor first, or dive straight in? I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
Happy designing in the round!
