At around 10am on Wednesday, 18 February 2026, an ordinary morning in Stanger (KwaDukuza), KwaZulu-Natal quickly turned into a shocking scene that left bank staff, customers and onlookers stunned.
Three elderly women arrived at a Capitec Bank branch in a Hyundai H1 mortuary vehicle carrying a large blue bag. Moments later, they carefully placed the bag at the entrance of the bank — only for it to be revealed that inside was the body of their deceased grandmother.
The family had allegedly brought the body as proof of death while trying to claim a delayed funeral policy payout.
This disturbing 2026 incident is not the first of its kind in KwaZulu-Natal.
In November 2019, the Mtshali family from Madundube also took the body of their relative to an Old Mutual branch after waiting for a funeral insurance payout that had reportedly been promised within 48 hours.
In July 2025, another KwaDukuza family carried a coffin containing the body of their loved one into a Capitec Bank branch at KwaDukuza Mall in protest over a funeral policy payout delay.
Now in 2026, history appears to have repeated itself.
Police have since confirmed that two women were arrested and are facing charges of extortion, intimidation and public disturbance. They were expected to appear before the KwaDukuza Magistrate’s Court on 19 February 2026.
These incidents have sparked widespread debate across South Africa about funeral insurance claims, poverty, grief, and the extreme lengths families are forced to go through to bury their loved ones with dignity.
