Family Camping In The Rain | Leaking Tent, Bored Kids, Grumpy Dad

Описание: Camping in the rain is not fun! Join us as we show you our video of our family camping trip in Criccieth in North Wales. With the weather forecast showing rain for 6 of our 7 days, we knew it would not be special. But we are hardened campers, or at least we thought we were so off we went.

We can tell you that at the end, we did find that no matter how much of a hardened camper you are… The noise and the confinement resulted in it not being that we would recommend to anyone.

The journey starts at about 5am in the morning, we checked the weather (and at that point considered cancelling the holiday.) But, no, like proper camping troopers, we would go. Face the elements and try and make the most of a bad deal
As we travelled to our destination in North Wales, the weather progressively got worse. Windscreen wipers going ten to the dozen and visibility often restricted to about 30ft. But this did not put us off.

Finally, after a very wet and windy journey after approx. 4.5 hours, we arrived at Criccieth. And unbelievably, the rain slowed down to an annoying drizzle, the type that just ensures you are damp through to the bone..

Within 2 hours we had the tent and all gear set up – Which for us was the quickest pitch ever! (Amazing what you can do when getting wet). Unfortunately, the holiday weather more or less continued in this vein for the first 5 days of the holiday.

So, what do you do with two young kids in tow, in a field, in the wet in North Wales?
With the rain only dying off for about two hours a day. And with you having 22 hours being couped up in a tent to think about it, we tried to ensure we utilised this time wisely.

The one thing we can say is that when it was dry, the countryside in Wales is lovely. It has amazing views (when the fog and mist lifted), so after driving the 200 miles plus to get there we wanted to ensure we did do something to remember.
On day 2, the rain stopped for about 2 hours, so we visited the stunning Criccieth Castle. Amazing views and a great bit of history and a great little ice cream parlour down the road.
Day 3, with our 2 hours of dry weather, we visited Caernarfon. Unfortunately, it was too bleak to spend visit the castle. But again, a beautiful town to visit if you are in the area.

Unfortunately, by day 3, tempers were becoming short though. Being crammed in a tent, listening to the rain and wind is not much fun – think of solitary confinement, but louder!
And then to top it all off, the tent sprung a leak! A slow drip was coming through the roof of our Vango Casa Lux tent on the seal.
We know now, that this may be due to us having the storm straps in the centre pulled too tight, but the wind had been horrific, so we had no option the previous night.
The drip got faster and we had to find bigger buckets. Having an ensuite shower in your tent was never the plan..
So wet carpet and bored kids. The week was not going well..

Fortunately, Scott had relatives in Wales, so we were able to visit them one day. And at least it stopped the kids from bouncing on the inflatables. We visited Snowdonia and we have to say although very windy, the views were spectacular.
We went to a huge old quarry, where they filmed the UK version of, I am a Celebrity get me out of here, during lockdown!
And after couple of hours, it was back to the tent, rain playing drums on the roof, kids bouncing off everything. By day 5 of doing this, Scott was on the verge of a breakdown, my hair was starting to go grey and even the kids had holiday blues, whilst being on holiday.

Day 6 – The sun!!! At last, the sun was starting to show its face. So off we went to try and make some use of the wetsuits and bodyboards that we had brought with us. We went to check out Aberdaron beach. A beautiful village and beach out past Abersoch. Unfortunately, it was very windy, but at least we had been touched by some rays of sun. We then did some shrimping back at Criccieth beach, which the kids loved.

And then the final day we were extra spoiled with blue skies. We went to the amazing Blackrock sands near Porthmadog. What a stunning lovely sandy beach this is. Easily rivalling many Cornish beaches.
And then up to Snowdonia to check out some more amazing scenery.
All in all, the holiday, was saved by these last two days. Amazing how two days of sun made us smile so much.
If nothing else, this holiday did teach us how hardy we were, but it also makes us think about whether holidays abroad or a caravan may suit us better in the future....
