STORYLINE:
China’s Foreign Ministry on Friday urged the U.S. to “take concrete actions” to maintain bilateral ties and not to allow a transit by Taiwan’s leader Lai Ching-te.

Lai is reportedly to make a stopover in Hawaii and maybe Guam during his visit to the island’s diplomatic allies in the Pacific in the coming weeks.

In Beijing, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian reiterated China’s opposition to such transits made by the Taiwanese leader in the U.S. and warned the Taiwan government’s efforts to seek independence with allies’ support would be “futile.”

China has long regarded the self-ruled island as its own territory and called the island’s leader a “separatist element.”

Separately, Lin underscored China’s commitment to conducting cooperation with Latin American countries “without attaching any conditions, targeting any third party, or competing for influence with any country” as President Xi Jinping was visiting Peru, where the annual Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum was about to open.

Lin made the remarks when commenting on China’s high-profile project of transforming a remote fishing town into a huge deep-water port to cash in on the inexorable rise of Chinese interest in resource-rich South America.

The Peruvian government hopes the port will become a strategic transhipment hub for the region, opening a new line connecting South America to Asia and speeding trade across the Pacific for Peru's blueberries, Brazil's soybeans and Chile's copper, among other exports.

However, the impoverished villagers said the project is depriving them of fishing waters and bringing no economic benefit to locals.
