Mytime Active’s award winning music programme ArtsTrain took to the stage at the Southbank Centre as part of the 2017 Next Generation Takes Over event. The event formed part of the EFG London Jazz Festival where we secured the headline slot performing to a packed venue just before the jazz legend Marcus Miller.
This year’s piece ‘Gentrification’ was an innovative cross-artform collaborative project inspired by ArtsTrain’s Patron, internationally renowned jazz artist Soweto Kinch. The project was led by Mercury Award winning composer and songwriter Eska, and acclaimed composer and producer James Yarde, working with young musicians and emerging artists from diverse musical and social backgrounds. The young people were challenged to come up with their own new musical and narrative responses to the theme. The finished piece was arranged as an ensemble of extended big band, gospel/soul vocals and spoken word. Working with Bromley Youth Music Trust, Bishop Justus School and ArtsTrain this project provided a unique insight into gentrification from the perspective of emerging young artists.
