Programme Note:
‘Gotō (Archipelago)’ is a soundscape, video, and solo piano work commissioned and performed by pianist Kimihiro Yasaka, who currently lives in Montreal, Canada, and Canadian-born, Kyushu-based composer Daryl Jamieson.
Gotō has been designated a World Heritage Site and has a unique culture. It is the departure point of Japanese envoys to the Tang Dynasty (including Kukai), has a deep history including Jōmon ruins, the unique natural sounds of the Gotō archipelago and, in particular, the ‘orasho’ of the Hidden Christians, making it an interesting place from a musical perspective. This is the fourth movement (focussed on the element 'air') and fourth intermezzo of this immersive, 70+ minute work for piano, audio, and video based on sound and video recordings made in Gotō over more than a year. The piano part of the intermezzi are improvised by the pianist in reaction to the field recordings, which are chosen by chance and different in each performance.
