Exercise Physiologist Ross Tucker and Legendary Endurance Runner Bobby McGee discuss how sport science, like any science, likes averages and as a result they are always talking about what training is best for the "average runner." But who's this completely average runner anyway? Each person falls somewhere on the pendulum of truth and virtually none of them will benefit from modelling their routine on that of a fictitious runner is almost certainly not on the same part of the spectrum as then are.
The truth is what works for one runner will probably not work for the other. That admission won't sell any books though, so nobody in the sports science community is ever going to write that. Instead you'll see books that champion something on the edge like barefoot running. These books will say that everyone should run barefoot. The reality is that only, say, 10% will run better barefoot while the other 90% will do themselves damage trying to, "run naturally." It's important to consider this because if you have been running for a while there is a good chance you might have been tempted to buy into ideas that are not doing you any favors.
