Systemic lupus erythematosus (lupus) is an autoimmune disease capable of causing severe tissue damage in many organs. The cause of SLE is unknown, but recent research has identified genes and infection-fighting chemicals (interferons) that are associated with the disease.
In this webinar, recorded on April 30, 2013, Dr. Erik Peterson discusses how University of Minnesota researchers have linked interferon to lupus, speculates on how lupus risk genes might control the levels and function of interferon, reviews the status of efforts to produce new treatments that target interferon, and describes a new study (supported in part with a 2013 research grant from the Lupus Foundation of Minnesota) that looks at how PTPN22, one lupus risk gene, affects interferon-producing capacity of lupus patients.
