Por eso, suelen ser bosques con poca diversidad florística, sobre todo los de suelos ácidos: el hayedo desnudo, fagetum nudum. Por eso, muchos de los árboles que conviven con las hayas y la mayoría de las plantas arbustivas y herbáceas del sotobosque tienen que florecer y fructificar en el breve tiempo que transcurre desde que se empiezan a elevar las temperaturas hasta que las hayas ya tienen hojas. Los robles, más precavidos, suelen echar la hoja en mayo, después que las hayas, para evitar las heladas tardías.
En este mini-vídeo incluyo algunas imágenes que reflejan esa situación en el Hayedo de Montejo, a finales del mes de marzo. Se aprecia que las hayas empiezan a mostrar un color rosado en sus copas, que anuncia el desarrollo de sus yemas, mientras que los robles mantienen su color grisáceo. Y, entre ellos, destacan los cerezos en flor (blanca), que atraen la atención de los polinizadores, así como los perennifolios acebos. Los sauces (en este caso, Salix atrocinerea), también florecen pronto. Entre las especies de matorral, destacan los endrinos (Prunus spinosa), con una floración espectacular. Y, en el sotobosque, Hepatica triloba, Viola odorata (y otras), Ranunculus ficaria, Primula veris, Gagea nevadensis, Bellis perennis y los narcisos (Narcissus pseudonarcissus, N triandrus pallidulus y N bulbocodium). También empiezan a desperezarse los polinizadores, como Bombus spp., la mariposa pavo real (Inachis io) y otros ninfálidos (Nymphalis spp.) e inician el celo las aves, como el petirrojo, el piquituerto o el trepador azul, que aparecen en el vídeo.

Beech (Fagus sylvatica) forests are shady, dark, magical forests. When foliation occurs, usually in April, the leaves are placed horizontally and make it difficult for light to reach the ground. For this reason, they tend to be forests with low floristic diversity, especially those with acidic soils: the bare beech forest, fagetum nudum. For this reason, many of the trees that coexist with beech trees and most of the scrub and herbaceous plants in the understory have to flower and bear fruit in the short time that elapses from when temperatures begin to rise until the beeches already have leaves. The oak trees, more cautious, usually leaf out in May, after the beech trees, to avoid late frosts.
In this mini-video I include some images that reflect this situation in the Hayedo de Montejo, Community of Madrid, Central Spain, at the end of March. It can be seen that the beech trees begin to show a pink color in their crowns, which announces the development of their buds, while the oaks maintain their grayish color. And, among them, the cherry blossom trees (white) stand out, which attract the attention of pollinators, as well as the evergreen hollies (Ilex aquifolium). Willows (in this case, Salix atrocinerea), also bloom early. Among the scrub species, blackthorns (Prunus spinosa) stand out, with spectacular flowering. And, in the understory, Hepatica triloba, Viola odorata (and others), Ranunculus ficaria, Primula veris, Gagea nevadensis, Bellis perennis and daffodils (Narcissus pseudonarcissus, N triandrus pallidulus and N bulbocodium). Pollinators also begin to stretch, such as Bombus spp., the peacock butterfly (Inachis io) and other nymphalids (Nymphalis spp.), and birds, such as the robin, the crossbill or the nuthatch, that may be seen in the video.
