In 1444, for the first time, a painter looked out a window and painted reality. The Swiss master Konrad Witz achieved something revolutionary in his St. Peter Altarpiece: he replaced the golden backgrounds of the Middle Ages with a recognizable, topographical location.
This video analyzes "The Miraculous Draught of Fishes," where Witz depicted the shores of Lake Geneva with astonishing accuracy, including the specific mountains and the reflection of the disciples in the water. It is widely considered the first true landscape in European painting history.
