This was a day hike with my hiking club, the Greenville Natural History Association (GNHA). GNHA is the largest and most active hiking club in Upstate South Carolina. We have approximately 600 members. Our hikes are in South Carolina, North Carolina and sometimes Tennessee and Georgia.
The hike was in Panthertown Valley, which is located in the Nantahala National Forest, North Carolina. The hike was on August 18, 2018. The hike stats: 11 miles & 2200 feet of elevation gain.
We started the hike from the Salt Rock entrance on the west side of Panthertown Valley. We did a loop around the valley and went to the top of Blackrock Mountain and Little Green Mountain. We saw the following waterfalls on this hike:
Elbow Falls
Red Butt Falls
Schoolhouse Falls
Granny Burrell Falls
Frolictown Falls
Wilderness Falls
We stopped at the Salt Rock overlook for one last look at the valley before completing the hike.
It is VERY easy to get lost in Panthertown. You need to have a map and excellent navigational skills if you are considering hiking in this area.
