In early 2026, Rio Grande Southern 20, a locomotive owned and operated by the Colorado Railroad Museum in Golden, CO, made a special visit to the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad to run a variety of special passenger and photographers specials.
This video features footage from February 18, 2026, of Rio Grande Southern 20 powering a flanger special up the Animas River Canyon through the first big snowstorm of the winter.
Built in 1899 by the Schenectady Locomotive Works, RGS 20 was a workhorse of the Rio Grande Southern, pulling trains from Durango to Ridgway, Colorado, from 1917 all the way up to 1951. RGS 20 is also famous for its appearance in the movie Ticket to Tomahawk, and in this video, 20 is wearing its original whistle from the movie. These 2026 runs are the first time the locomotive has run in the Durango area since the 1950s.
And for those wondering - Hyce was on the locomotive crew for this flanger run.
