ABOUT THIS HIKE
In May of 2025 we spent two days hiking the Sage Creek Loop in the wilderness area of Badlands National Park
🏜️ The Sage Creek Loop is a 21 mile looks according to AllTrails, but it’s definately more because you can't perfectly follow the map on AllTrails. It’s unmarked terrain with peaks and canyons you need to traverse and often backtrack.
🗺️ A downloaded map, a compass, and minimal understanding of topography maps are needed to find your way.
🦬 Follow the bison poop. Seriously. I've never been so happy to see huge glops of poop in my life.
📸 Turn around and take pictures of where you came from frequently incase you need to backtrack. Everything starts looking the same once you're in the wild.
⛺️ It took us 15 hours of just hiking time so plan to sleep there 1 night. some do 2 nights but that would require more water + food (more weight to carry)
💧 Bring more water than you think you'll need. 5-6L per person so you don't run out hours before you finish the trail and start questioning your chances of survival.
🧦 Bring 3 pairs of wool socks!! 1 pair for sleeping and the other 2 for hiking. Air out your feet and switch socks every time you take a break, letting the worn pair of socks dry on the outside of your pack.
☀️ No shade other than Deer Haven so don't attempt during the summer months. The peak during the first weekend in May was 75F for us and felt brutal if the breeze stopped.
🥶 temp dropped below 40F at night! We had Nemo 30 degree bags and were cold. Except Eliza because she had a 15 degree sleeping bag
🌧️ Don't attempt if there were heavy rains in the pervious days. A big portion of the trail would become a mud slide.
