Clients Deserve to Know Who You Are

It’s telling that some therapists are upset about being asked about their political views—as if it’s an attack, rather than a reasonable and necessary inquiry from people seeking safe, affirming care. The truth is, therapy isn’t neutral. Our identities, values, and worldviews shape how we show up in the room—whether we name them or not. Clients, especially those from intentionally and historically marginalized identities, deserve to know if the person they're opening up to is going to affirm their humanity or quietly (or not so quietly) stand in opposition to them getting their basic needs met.
If you are a therapist who supports an administration that is actively ripping away the rights of many of the people who are most likely to seek therapy—queer folks, trans folks, BIPOC, immigrants, disabled people, women, and others—you have a duty to publicly display yourself as someone who holds potential bias. You have a responsibility to make clear who you are and who you may not be competent to serve. That’s not cancel culture. That’s informed consent.
By any and all ethical standards, our duty as therapists is to do no harm. If you cannot put aside your personal beliefs or at least name the limitations they may create in the room, then you are not in a position to walk alongside those you may hurt. Ethical care isn’t just about avoiding overt harm—it’s about actively creating spaces where clients can feel seen, safe, and respected. If being asked about your politics makes you uncomfortable, maybe it’s time to examine what you’re trying to protect—and who you’re willing to harm in the process.
