This is not about being “decolonial.”
This is about the 𝐛𝐚𝐬𝐢𝐜, 𝐧𝐨𝐧‑𝐧𝐞𝐠𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐬 of working with children and families.
Advocates, journalists, and legal organizations have documented that children in ICE custody — including at the South Texas Family Residential Center in Dilley, TX — are being held in conditions that violate every principle of child‑centered care.
Reports describe:
• 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐮𝐝𝐲, 𝐮𝐧𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞 𝐰𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫, with children and adults fighting for clean drinking water, despite infants needing formula mixed with safe water.

Play therapy is built on core commitments:
• Children deserve 𝐬𝐚𝐟𝐞𝐭𝐲, 𝐝𝐢𝐠𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲, and 𝐚𝐭𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞.
• Families deserve 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧, 𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐭, and 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭.
• Caregivers deserve 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐝𝐨 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐢𝐫 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐫𝐞𝐧.
Detention centers violate every one of these principles.
You cannot support or excuse systems that:
• Detain children in unsafe, unsanitary conditions, exposing them to violence and trauma at a young age
• Separate families or hold them for months without due process
• Provide contaminated food and unsafe water
• Create environments where people are regularly abused and die in custody
…and still claim to practice play therapy, child‑centered therapy, or family‑centered care.
This is not honoring the child.
This is not honoring the family.
This is not honoring the caregiver.
𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐲.
✨ 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐨𝐫 𝐧𝐨𝐭 — 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐚𝐦𝐞
You do not need to identify as a decolonial clinician to understand this.
You only need to understand what it means to protect children.
• If you support or minimize these conditions, you are not practicing play therapy.
• If you stay silent while children are harmed, you are not practicing play therapy.
• If you align with systems that traumatize families, you are not practicing play therapy.

This is not “politics.”
𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐢𝐬 𝐚 𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐝‑𝐰𝐞𝐥𝐟𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬, 𝐚 𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐚𝐧‑𝐫𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐬 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥‑𝐞𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐬 𝐜𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐬.

• Expose what is happening
• Speak out
• Stand against systems harming children and families
