AI transformation is like a test series, we’re only on day one: Ashwini Vaishnaw at Davos

Описание: Union Minister for Electronics and IT Ashwini Vaishnaw on Thursday compared the global artificial intelligence transformation to a five-match Test cricket series, saying the world is still only on the first day of the opening match. Speaking at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos, Vaishnaw emphasised that AI is still at a very early stage and its full impact on economies, societies and governance will unfold gradually over time.

Highlighting India’s approach to emerging technologies, Vaishnaw said the government is focused on building strong digital public infrastructure, ethical frameworks and scalable innovation to ensure AI delivers inclusive growth. He noted that while AI is already reshaping sectors such as manufacturing, healthcare, education and governance, its long-term implications require careful planning, global cooperation and responsible regulation.

The minister said India is positioning itself as a trusted global partner in the AI ecosystem by combining talent, data-driven platforms and cost-effective innovation. He stressed the importance of developing AI solutions that are accessible, affordable and aligned with democratic values. According to Vaishnaw, India’s experience with large-scale digital platforms such as Aadhaar, UPI and DigiLocker provides valuable lessons for deploying AI at population scale.

Vaishnaw also underlined the need for skilling and reskilling the workforce to prepare for AI-led disruption. He said technology should augment human capabilities rather than replace them, adding that policy frameworks must balance innovation with safeguards against misuse.

His remarks come amid intense global debate at Davos over AI governance, regulation, and its potential to widen or bridge economic inequalities. With countries racing to harness artificial intelligence, Vaishnaw’s analogy signalled that patience, strategy and long-term vision will be critical as the AI journey unfolds.
