Today we visit Washington, D.C. and their incredible Audi Field!
History:
Audi Field is a 20,000-seat soccer-specific stadium in Washington, D.C.’s Buzzard Point neighborhood, serving as home to D.C. United, the Washington Spirit, DC Power FC, and the DC Defenders. Its development followed more than a decade of unsuccessful attempts to secure a permanent home for D.C. United, which had long played at RFK Stadium. Early plans focused on Poplar Point, where the team proposed a mixed-use waterfront development. Though initially supported by some city officials, the proposal drew criticism over public financing and concerns about displacement. Negotiations stalled repeatedly, and after the main developer withdrew, the plans collapsed. The team then pursued other alternatives, including Prince George’s County near FedExField, but local opposition derailed those efforts as well. Discussions with Baltimore and later Loudoun County followed, with multiple studies exploring feasibility, but no agreement materialized.
A new ownership group in 2012 revitalized momentum, and Buzzard Point emerged as the preferred site. In 2013, the District and the club reached a tentative deal involving a land swap and city-supported site preparation. The D.C. Council approved the project in 2014, later revising terms so the city would directly purchase land and use eminent domain if necessary. The city committed about $150 million toward land acquisition and infrastructure, while D.C. United agreed to contribute at least that amount toward construction. After contentious negotiations over property values and a brief flirtation by the team with relocating to Virginia, a final agreement was signed in 2015. Eminent domain filings soon followed, and in February 2017 the stadium secured a long-term naming rights agreement with Audi. Ground was broken later that month, and the venue officially opened in July 2018 with a D.C. United win before a capacity crowd.
Audi Field quickly became a multi-sport venue. It regularly hosts MLS, NWSL, collegiate matches, U.S. national team games, and occasional international club friendlies. Loudoun United played several matches there during its inaugural season. The stadium has also staged major events such as the MLS All-Star Game, the 2022 NWSL Championship, and fixtures in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup. Beyond soccer, the Premier Lacrosse League has used the venue for league matches and its championship, and international rugby arrived in 2024 with the United States hosting Scotland. Additional men’s and women’s test matches were scheduled for 2025. The DC Defenders of the XFL, later UFL, made Audi Field their home beginning in 2020, drawing strong crowds before the pandemic curtailed the season, and resumed play there upon the league’s return in 2023.
The stadium is accessible via the Navy Yard–Ballpark Metro station and various shuttle and bus services. Although generally praised since opening, the natural grass surface has faced occasional criticism, especially during periods of heavy use or event overlap, prompting midseason turf replacements. Despite these challenges, Audi Field has established itself as a major sports venue in the capital region, anchoring redevelopment in Buzzard Point and providing a permanent home for multiple professional teams.
