Today we visit Austin, Texas and their amazing Q2 Stadium!
History:
Q2 Stadium is a soccer-specific venue located in the North Burnet area of North Austin, Texas, and serves as the home ground of Austin FC, which joined Major League Soccer in 2021. Officially known as Q2 Stadium at McKalla Place, the venue has a capacity of roughly 20,500 spectators and features a grass playing surface with both seated and safe-standing sections. Privately financed at an estimated cost of $260 million, the stadium is owned by the City of Austin and operated by Two Oak Ventures LLC, with Anthony Precourt as the principal owner of the club. It officially opened on June 16, 2021, with its first event being a women’s international friendly between the United States and Nigeria.
The site’s history predates the stadium by several decades and includes extensive industrial use. Beginning in 1956, the land operated as a chemical manufacturing plant producing peroxides for Reichhold Chemicals. After nearly three decades, the facility closed in 1985 following multiple safety incidents. The property was annexed into Austin city limits in 1973 and later sold to the City of Austin in 1995. Plans to develop it as a municipal service center were abandoned after illegally stored chemical waste was discovered during construction in 2003, prompting a full environmental remediation and a legal settlement with the former owner. When Precourt Sports Ventures announced its intent to relocate Columbus Crew SC to Austin, the McKalla Place site emerged as the preferred stadium location after public debate and city council approval in 2018, leading to a long-term lease agreement finalized that December.
Construction preparations accelerated in 2019, with Gensler selected as lead architect and Austin Commercial as construction manager. Rezoning approvals and site plans were finalized that year, and groundbreaking took place in September. The project included not only the stadium itself but surrounding green space and future mixed-use development potential. In early 2021, a naming-rights agreement with local financial technology company Q2 Holdings officially branded the venue as Q2 Stadium. Public transportation access has been a major feature of the stadium’s planning. The venue sits adjacent to McKalla station on CapMetro’s Red Line commuter rail, which opened in 2024 to provide a direct, road-free walking connection. Prior to that, fans relied on the nearby Kramer station. Several bus routes, including the Rapid 803 line, also serve the stadium, strengthening its regional accessibility.
Since opening, Q2 Stadium has hosted a wide range of sporting and cultural events. Austin FC played its first home match there in June 2021, drawing a sellout crowd, and the club has consistently averaged capacity crowds across multiple MLS seasons. The stadium has become a frequent host for U.S. national team matches, Gold Cup games, World Cup qualifiers, and Nations League fixtures, as well as Copa América matches in 2024. Beyond soccer, Q2 Stadium has staged concerts and other sports, including rugby sevens, establishing itself as a prominent multipurpose venue in Austin’s sports and entertainment landscape.
