Painting, Assemblage & Social Memory | Carl Joe Williams | Project Atrium
This video was created by Michael LeGrand as part of an artist film series documenting Project Atrium installations at MOCA Jacksonville.
In this piece, artist Carl Joe Williams reflects on a body of work that uses color, found objects, and storytelling to confront collective trauma, history, and the unresolved tensions of American life.
As the filmmaker, my goal was to capture how spectacle functions as an entry point—drawing viewers in before asking them to sit with difficult questions about identity, power, and memory. The film traces Williams’ process of gathering materials from his environment and weaving personal narrative with broader social realities.
This project treats installation not just as form, but as conversation—extending from the gallery into public discourse and digital space. The film reflects my interest in documenting work that does not offer answers, but instead creates room for reflection, dialogue, and responsibility.
