She grew up in a rasta family in Jamaica in the 80’s.
Her mother is fond of literature and poetry. Her father is a musician, playing guitar and singing reggae music. As a Rastaman he hates Babylon... for Babylon is all about slavery, colonialism, consumerism, white supremacy... in other words, Babylon is evil.
That’s why Safya’s father has his own rules based on rastafarism. In the name of Jah, his God, he doesn’t want his kids (Safya, her brother and her sister) to be perverted by Babylon...
The book narrates how Safya will conqueer her own freedom by reading and writing poems.
