Introduction to Nibelia
(based on Le Livre des Etoiles)

When you reach Nibelia, there are many seas of smoke to land on. You can navigate these heavy sulfhydric vapours. So, sail away, until the towers of Nefalla.
So peculiar are the snowfalls on the city-factory. Like unceasing cotton drizzles. Unlike snow, each flake is so queerly lukewarm. Touching the ground, flakes turn to a creepy fog. Clouds above, mist below. The colonial towers swallowed up in the dancing vapours. This modest world hides so much ugliness.
A miraculous blue ore provides Nibelia’s wealth. A rock named nibelium by the settlers. That’s the only reason why a so empty planet was colonized. The prospectors must search for it in the depths of the blue lands. Brought back to the surface, the stones react to Nibelia’s atmosphere, rocks exhale a vaporous gas. Blue lands, blue stones, blue gas. This gas is a godsend for space travellers. It’s an incredible booster for spacecraft combustive. Space guild, of course, had the monopoly on the nibelium.
Colourful flows of steam are dancing everywhere, a wedding waltz in a sort.
There are no inhabitants on Nibelia, nor fauna, except giant luminescent caterpillars. Very apathetic creatures, perpetually lost in a common cosmic dream.
When the caterpillar reaches the acme of its mental maturity, its sadness vanishes, it evaporates and its smoky substance flies away to upper clouds.
By chance, a topographer discovered this phenomenon. On the top of Nibelia’s highest mountain, he heard voices coming from the upper clouds, clouds born out from the soul vapours of the caterpillars. This strange oratorio cleansed his soul of all bad feelings. Many people wanted to know such a miracle. They climbed the misty mountains to listen to this celestial choir. Higher and higher, on the foggy slopes. Higher and higher, to the ghostly pikes. Higher and higher, until the ethereal summits. Some of them heard the voices of the clouds. Lot of them never came back.
